Burning Mouth Syndrome

Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS), or Burning Tongue Syndrome, is a type of nerve pain that causes constant (or almost constant) burning pain in the mouth. It is unclear what causes this very difficult pain disorder; at times, deficiency of Zinc or dry mouth can also lead to burning mouth syndrome. Burning mouth syndrome commonly affects females after menopause and can be accompanied by loss of taste along with the pain. Most tests, including X-rays and lab tests, tend to come back normal in this condition.

BMS is usually a difficult problem, and treatment response tends to be unpredictable. Some patients require a few different treatment trials before finding something that works.
